The Annerley-Stephens History Group Inc. (ASHG), formed in 2013, is the story of how a local history organisation could expand into a local centre of history energy and excellence in four years.  The ASHG has focussed on the active communication of history to people in the 10 suburbs that make up the old Stephens Shire Council area, which was absorbed into Brisbane City Council in 1925. The ASHG holds frequent information sessions in city libraries, church halls, and other local venues. It has pioneered the “History in the Pub” format that has been so successful in sharing the history of the local area and allowing people within this Stephens area to add to the local historical base by sharing photographs and documents held within their families. The ASHG is also well represented at local activities with stalls at fetes and markets throughout the area. With local suburb information days regularly gathering 50 – 80 people, the society has seen strong support from local politicians that has aided our success.

The Annerley-Stephens History Group Inc. won the Queensland State Library John Oxley Community History Award in 2017 for the “Frank Corley House Photos” project, led by Project Manager, Denis Peel. The 2016 “Stories of Stephens” conference and the subsequent 2017 “Stories of Stephens” book, compiled by Stephen Sheaffe have been other key recent achievements.
