The Boggo Road Gaol Historical Society Inc. was formed in 2003 from the Boggo Road museum. Ex-officer and museum manager John Banks was the founding president. It is a very large volunteer organisation (300 in 2013), taking in not only serious history research in prison studies, but acting as a memory community for former prisoners and prison officers, and ‘prison buffs’. The Society collect artefacts, lobby government, and operate the Queensland Prisons Museum in Caboolture. Its noted historian is Chris Dawson, a graduate of the University of Queensland’s former Centre of Applied History. Dawson runs Boggo Books, a not-for-profit publishing project, which has not only been prolific in small booklets (large quality history essays) on the historic Brisbane prison, but prolific in informative essays on the surrounding area of the prison – Dutton Park, Fairfield, and South Brisbane. As the historian of Boggo Road Gaol Historical Society Inc., Dawson has also produced important local history essays and websites on the theme of capital punishment and cemeteries.
