AMBITIOUS CHAIN PLAN OF CO-OPERATIVE STORES

An ambitious plan to establish a chain of stores in the suburbs is the latest development in the co-operative movement in Brisbane.

Known as the Brisbane Co-operative Stores Society Ltd. it is hoped to open the first shop at Moorooka in a month’s time, stated the secretary of the Society (Mr R. Henderson) today.

The building had already been acquired, and it was anticipated that the society would have about 130 members by the opening day.

The acquiring of suitable premises had been one of the chief difficulties to be overcome. A number that would have been suitable were already occupied by people as residences.

Mr Henderson said that as a store was established in a suburb it would have its own directorate, a member of which would bo represented on the directorate of the society.

The Selectors’ Association of Queensland also intends applying for registration as a consumers’ co operative, the secretary (Mr Humphreys) stated today.

In response to a circular promises equivalent to £2,000 in shares have been received from members.

Mr Humphreys stated that the co operative would be established in Brisbane. A provisional board of directors had been appointed, comprising the five divisional presidents of the association. The secretary of the Co-operative union of Queensland (Mr C. Kidd) reported today that at a meeting last night an additional nine co operatives had joined the union.

The membership of the union, he said, now represented a turn over of millions of pounds a year, Three of the co-operatives that joined last night were operating in Brisbane, making a total of seven in the area.

At the week-end Mr Kidd and the president of the union (Mr S. Lloyd) visited Dalby to assist in the formation of a new co-operative.

Another co-operative had been formed at Gympie, and inquiries concerning the forming of co-operatives had been received from Springbrook, Mitchell. Mundubbera, Ballandean and Innisfail.
